French authorities to begin stopping small boats in English Channel after British demands
France has agreed to begin intercepting small boats in the Channel, after months of pressure from the UK.
The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the French leader urging him to support the plan and saying there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to official confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both officers and civilians.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."
Now, a French maritime police representative says personnel will start intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.
Significantly, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential technique to disable the engines of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a brief shift towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the former government official left government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, in the run-up to a meeting between the UK leader and President, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.
Now French authorities will again be allowed to intercept boats before they collect migrant passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.
Strong winds are currently delaying the start of interceptions and the human trafficking gangs will be seeking methods to adjust to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
